Aug 25, What is the difference between Embroidery and Cross Stitch

by Kim
(Vero Beach, Florida, USA)

I have always wondered what the difference is between needlepoint, needlepoint embroidery, and cross stitch. Can you help me out with that, as I have patterns for embroidery, that I have always done in cross stitch, not knowing the difference.

Thanks,
Kim

Amy's Answer
Embroidery is a larger term that refers to any type of decorative thread work stitched on top of fabric. So under that umbrella fall different types of embroidery methods such as needlepoint, cross stitch, punch needle, crewel, blackwork, and many others.

So cross stitch is a type of embroidery. Needlepoint is another type of embroidery. You can learn more about each method in the different sections on the website.

Great question, Kim! Thanks for asking.
